light the night

The days are getting shorter as winter throws its cape around us. Recently, while driving at dusk through a little town in Vermont, I slowed down and stared up at the trees. Bellow Falls was transformed in a way I’d never seen before. Every tree and branch was covered with thousands of white lights making it literally glow. “Thanks to a $15,000 state coronavirus economic stimulus grant, Bellows Falls is going to positively glow this holiday season. The effort, “Light Up BF...” Smallheer, S. (2020 November 24) Brattleboro Reformer

The lights made me think about Jesus and this season. He is The Light of the world. He shares His Light with all who ask to be a part of His Kingdom.

Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand---shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16 MSG

Heavenly Father, You’ve given man/woman kind so much of Yourself. Attributes like courage, resilience, strength, perseverance, faith, hope, and love. Men and women who have lived wisely and well (Jesus followers) will shine brilliantly, like the cloudless, star-strewn night skies. And those who put others on the right path to life will glow like stars forever. Daniel 12:3 MSG Your Light and ours shine brightest when it’s darkest outside. Amen.
