A Cup of Water

My friend watched as an older man with no smile stood by the side of the road, waiting for the garbage truck to make its rounds. She wondered if he was going to scold them for not doing their job to his satisfaction. She was surprised when the old man handed the workers two jugs of water and encouraged them to drink it because the day was so hot.

Mark 9:41 records: “For whoever gives you a cup of water to drink in My Name, because you belong to Christ, assuredly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” God looks at the motives of our hearts. He knows us better than we know ourselves. And He is pleased when we do things out of selfless love and sacrifice. God says in Philippians 2:3: “Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves.” (The Living Bible)

Father God, I often fall short of this command. I am, by nature, selfish and self centered. Please help me to check the motives of my heart daily and often. Please forgive me for my pride. Help me to remember that You sent Your Son as a humble baby boy Who grew into THE MAN Who willingly laid down His life for all mankind. Please help me to check the motives of my heart daily and often. Help me not to miss opportunities to serve others in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
