The Pros and Cons of Church

Being raised in the church has its pros and cons.

Pro: As a missionary and preacher’s daughter, I had the privilege of being taught God’s Word at a very young age. Hiding His Word in my heart (aka; memorizing Bible verses), has been key to a solid and firm foundation on which I’ve built my life. Because of HIS knowledge and wisdom, I made many life decisions that produced excellent results.

Con: Being raised in the church exposed me to legalism (man made rules), hypocrisy and clique-like (we’re better than everyone else) behavior. I was surrounded by people who wear “masks,” thinking that this somehow attracts unbelievers to Jesus Christ. (Not true!)

Having lived on the earth for half a century, I’ve experienced many trials and tribulations. But, what I know for sure, is that Jesus loves me right where I am. His love is constant. No matter what!

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 (NIV)

Father God, Your Love set us free! Your Mission Statement for the Kingdom of God is simple: “Love God first. Then Love your neighbor.” That’s it! You do the rest. Please, as a body of believers, may Your Church turn back to... Being like Jesus. Loving like Jesus. Serving our community like Jesus. Amen.

There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. 1 John 4:18 (NIV)
