The car honked loudly and the driver waved furiously, warning us that the street we were about to turn on was one way only. We quickly corrected our course and continued on our way.
This incident reminded me of a statement I’ve heard often; “There are many ways/roads that lead to God.” But the Bible proclaims over and over again that just the opposite is true.
Ephesians 4:4-5, There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, Who is above all, and through all, and in all.
Thomas, Jesus’ disciple, asked him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the Way? Jesus said to him, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:5-6
John also records in 10:7-9 “Then Jesus said to them again, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the Door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and find pasture. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.”
My daughter Jetts, recently traveled to New Hampshire from Virginia. There were many roads she could have taken to get there, but the fact remained that she had to head North the entire time. Had she veered off course and gone South, East, or West, she would have never arrived at her destination.
The book of Acts records that the apostles John and Peter were arrested by the religious leaders of the day because they were telling the people that there was only one way to God through Jesus Christ. “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other Name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12 This statement offended them greatly because they had built their entire religion on man made rules that included good works and self righteousness. They were going the wrong way and didn’t want to give up their deeply held faith and traditions.
Father God, thank you sending your Son, Jesus Christ, to show us the right Way to relationship with You for eternity. Amen.
