He Gives Good Gifts

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, Who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17

This morning the sun rose once again; shining brilliantly on the changing leaves; warming my face and body after a heavy frost. Colorful mums and pumpkins decorate the front porch. And, oh the baked goodies....pumpkin bars, rolls, cookies, and pies. YUM! These are all gifts from God. And they make me feel good all over! But, in this life, He also allows “gifts” that hurt. These gifts can include many things like poor health, the loss of a friend or loved one, financial struggles, marital discord, and betrayal by people we’d once trusted.

What God promises, however, is that even painful gifts can and do produce beauty in ways that are unimaginable. The Bible is full of people who had many problems and yet God showed up over and over again, bringing glory to His Name through the lives of those who loved Him more than anything else and trusted and followed Him with all their hearts.

God, thank You for all Your gifts. The ones that feel good and the ones that don’t. The painful gifts make me lean into You more than ever, drawing me close to You and Your Word. You see the big picture and know what You are doing at all times. Even when I can’t see the outcome, I know You do. You will bring good out of every situation as I trust and depend on You Alone. And I know that all things work together for good to those that are the called according to His purposes. Thank You Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
