God's Incomprehensible Love

While driving through town last week, I noticed a bumper sticker that appeared to be a cartoon character urinating on a cross. My first reaction was shock, quickly followed by anger. But then, a verse popped into my head: “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:6-8)

The Holy Spirit reminded me that He adores His creation. He died for every human being. God’s love for us is not based on how lovable we are, but rather on the constancy of His own character. God’s supreme act of love came when we were at our most undesirable. (John MacArthur commentary p. 2426)

So, in essence, God sacrificed His Son knowing in advance that most would reject His gift.....But, He did it anyway.

Father, it is difficult for me to comprehend Your love for mankind. My first husband, Joe, used to comment, “Why He would ever die for me (and all mankind) is beyond comprehension. We are so unworthy.” And yet, You tell us in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Your Son’s mission was rooted in unconditional love for all mankind. Thank you.

For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

John 3:17
