An Excellent Woman

My first husband’s grandmother, ‘Nannie Kathryn’, prepared weekly dinners for her family. As we sat together every Sunday, I was always amazed at the variety and deliciousness of the meals she served.

When I took Nannie grocery shopping, I remember vividly her detailed, hand written list outlining what she needed for the Sunday meal. She was always prepared and we enjoyed the fruits of her labor and love for years.

Nannie Kathryn exhibited the traits of a godly wife and mom. She committed her life to the Lord Jesus Christ and lived according to His Word. She modeled the principles of the Proverbs 31 woman.

Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. (vs 10-11) She seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands. (v 13) She also rises while it is yet night, and provides food or her household, and a portion for her maidservants. (v 15) She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. (v 20) Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also and he praises her... (vs 25-28)

Father God, thank you for the privilege of knowing and loving Kathryn Neal. She was an integral part of who I am today. I admired her and still strive to be the kind of woman she was. Thank you for her legacy. Amen.

Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands and let her own works praise her in the gates.

Proverbs 31:30-31
