Cheap Imitations

While teaching our Youth Group recently, we discussed the following Scripture:

So Moses and Aaron went into Pharaoh, and they did so, just as the Lord commanded. And Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent. But Pharaoh also called (his sorcerers, magicians and ‘wise’ men who threw down their rods which became serpents; paraphrased) But Aaron’s rod swallowed up their rods.” Exodus 7:10-12

The magicians in these passages were cheats, trying to copy the real miracles of God. To a small extent, they succeeded, and deceived the bystanders. But, their true nature was revealed when God’s rod swallowed the fake ones.

Fake prophets (preachers, priests, rabbis, etc.) abound today; deceiving many to an eternity without Christ. They may preach fancy, “feel good” sermons or use fancy music or even perform fancy miracles to prove they are God’s “chosen.” Be very, very careful around such prophets. There is NOTHING more powerful or genuine than the Word of God. If you’re not encouraged to read and understand the Bible for yourself through the Holy Spirit, beware of deception.

Father God, You are the REAL THING!! Thank you for Your Word!! It is a lamp on my feet, and a light to my path. (Psalm 109:105) You make Yourself very clear. Please open my eyes to deception as the evil one is disguised as an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14) Help me to stay grounded in Your Word and to understand Who You Are; not who I think You are. Amen.

Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name and in Your name drive out demons and in Your name perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

Matthew 7:22-23
