Burnt Offering

The smell of burnt english muffins (with peanut butter) often greets family and friends when they visit our home around breakfast or lunch. My husband puts up with this quirk because he knows it’s one of my favorite things to eat!

In the Old Testament, God required burnt offerings as a sacrifice to atone for the sins committed by mankind. This law was in effect before Jesus Christ set His feet on the earth. After Jesus accomplished his mission of dying on the cross for our sins, God didn’t require burnt offerings anymore.

But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.

Hebrews 10:12-14

What Jesus did on the cross is enough to cover all of man’s sin; past, present and future. His once-for-all offering to God the Father is God’s way of reaching out to mankind in his wretched and depraved condition.

Father God, thank You that we don’t need to do burnt offerings to atone for our sins anymore. Jesus is our High Priest; the Way to eternity with You. We get to choose whether we believe You or not. How it must grieve You that many choose to reject your gift. Please, in Jesus’ Name, help those who are Yours to respond to the Holy Spirit’s urging; to give their lives over to You completely. And when they do, help them to grow in the knowledge and truth of Your Word and watch You work! Amen.

So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His Spirit. John 19:30
